What is seaweed / kelp?

Kelp is a collective name for large brown algae (Laminaria, Macrocystis and related species). As a supplement, it is sold in powder, capsule or dried form, often with claims regarding thyroid support, coat and skin health, or as a source of minerals and antioxidants. In the Netherlands, kelp products are freely available, also for animals.

Claims versus evidence

Manufacturers and online sources regularly cite kelp as "natural" support for the thyroid, the immune system and coat quality in dogs and cats. None of these claims has been confirmed in controlled veterinary studies [2]. There is therefore no clinically substantiated therapeutic benefit for this application in companion animals.

Why are the risks real?

Highly variable iodine content

Kelp naturally contains iodine, but the amount varies enormously per product and per harvest — variations of a factor of ten or more have been measured [2]. The amount on the label does not always match the actual content in practice, because product regulation for animal supplements is limited.

In cats with existing or latent thyroid disease, even a small daily dose of iodine can exceed the tolerance threshold. A laboratory study showed that hypothyroid cats developed clinical hyperthyroidism (weight loss, fever, increased heart rate) at a dose that healthy cats apparently tolerated well [1]. Iodine excess can also cause hypothyroidism in both species via the so-called Wolff-Chaikoff effect [2].

Arsenic contamination

In 8 out of 9 tested kelp products, arsenic levels were measured above the FDA tolerance limit [2]. Long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic has been linked to neurological damage. This contamination risk is independent of the iodine content and applies to every kelp product, even at recommended usage amounts.

Case series

A published case series described thyroid dysfunction in cats after feeding a commercial diet containing kelp [3]. The animals showed classic signs of iodine-induced thyroid disease which improved after the product was discontinued.

For what complaints is it used?

In practice, kelp is sometimes recommended for:

  • Slow metabolism or weight gain
  • Poor coat or skin problems
  • "Immune support"

For none of these indications is there veterinary evidence of efficacy in dogs or cats. The above complaints warrant diagnostic investigation by a veterinary surgeon, not an uncontrolled supplement.

Advice

Do not give kelp or seaweed products to cats or dogs with a known or suspected thyroid disorder. Caution is also advised in healthy animals due to contamination risks and the absence of any demonstrated benefit. Always consult a veterinary surgeon before giving additional supplements, especially if your animal is using medication or is younger or older.

Why this verdict?

There are no controlled clinical veterinary studies demonstrating therapeutic benefit of seaweed or kelp in dogs or cats. Available evidence consists of one laboratory study in cats [1], one narrative review [2] and one case series [3] — all with limited design and no placebo control. The evidence verdict is therefore Insufficient.

Legal status (Netherlands)

In the Netherlands, kelp products are freely available as dietary supplements for animals. There is no mandatory registration or standardised iodine limit for animal supplements, meaning the actual content can differ significantly from the labelling.
