Disclaimer

Everything on this website is general, scientific information about natural and complementary veterinary medicine — not personal veterinary advice. This site is written for the situation in the Netherlands and follows Dutch law.

Not veterinary advice

The information on this website is general, scientific information and explicitly not personal veterinary advice. It does not replace consultation, diagnosis or treatment by a veterinary surgeon or another qualified professional.

Never treat a sick animal on your own

Never use natural remedies, herbs or supplements on your own for a (suspected) condition. Only stop, start or change medication in consultation with your vet. Many natural substances can interact with medicines, or are outright toxic in certain species.

«Natural» does not mean «safe»

Species differ greatly in what they tolerate: essential oils, for example, are toxic to cats, and garlic/onion (Allium) to both dogs and cats. Never reason from one species to another, and not from humans to animals. The biggest risk of treating an animal yourself is delaying effective, necessary care.

If in doubt, or in an emergency

  • Symptoms or doubts: contact your vet.
  • Acute or life-threatening (breathing difficulty, unresponsive, seizures, a swollen or hard abdomen): call your vet or the out-of-hours veterinary service/emergency clinic straight away.
  • (Possible) poisoning or ingestion of a toxic substance: call your vet immediately — do not wait for symptoms, and take the packaging with you.

The Netherlands has no public 24/7 poisons line for animals of the kind that exists for people; the vet is the route to take.

No promises of treatment or cure

We make no promises of cure or treatment and describe what the evidence shows, not what a seller promises. Where we write about support or symptom relief, we distinguish that explicitly from a cure. We do not give dosages as a prescription: dosing and treatment belong with the vet.

Accuracy and liability

We do our utmost to keep information correct, current and well sourced, and we grade the evidence transparently (see our method). Even so, we cannot guarantee completeness or accuracy; science and legislation change. We accept no liability for decisions taken on the basis of this information. Spotted a mistake? Let us know — we process corrections visibly.
