Natural flea and tick control in dogs: risks and lack of evidence
Natural flea and tick control for dogs seems attractive, but agents like tea tree oil and garlic are toxic and lack proven efficacy.

Why 'natural' does not mean 'safe or effective'
Many owners choose herbs, essential oils or dietary supplements to repel fleas and ticks from their dog. The reasoning sounds logical: fewer chemicals, less risk. The reality is the opposite: none of the common 'natural' products has been shown to be effective in clinical studies in dogs, and several are demonstrably toxic.
Tea tree oil (melaleuca)
Tea tree oil is known as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, but is toxic to dogs. A case series of 443 poisonings (2002–2012) showed that all exposed animals developed neurological symptoms — including ataxia, tremors and lethargy — typically within two to twelve hours after skin contact [1]. The authors explicitly advise against use in animals. The more concentrated the product, the greater the risk; even 'diluted' products can be dangerous.
Garlic
Garlic is promoted as a flea repellent via the dog's skin or breath, but there is no clinical evidence whatsoever for this effect. What is proven: thiosulphates in garlic damage red blood cells and cause haemolytic anaemia (Heinz body anaemia) in dogs. Garlic is three to five times more toxic than onion on a weight basis [2]. Regular small amounts can cause cumulative damage without immediately visible symptoms.
Diatomaceous earth
Diatomaceous earth can mechanically kill fleas in the environment by damaging the wax layer of their exoskeleton. On the dog itself, there is no proven preventive effect. Moreover, the fine powder irritates the mucous membranes and airways when inhaled — both of the dog and of the owner.
Brewer's yeast and B vitamins
These supplements have been promoted as flea repellents for decades. Veterinary sources are unanimous: there is no clinical evidence that they work [3]. The assumption that fleas avoid odour signals from B vitamins has never been confirmed in controlled studies in dogs.
Essential oils (lavender, cedarwood, citronella)
For lavender, cedarwood and citronella as tick repellents, clinical evidence in dogs is also lacking [3]. Essential oils can cause skin irritation and, in small dogs, systemic toxicity. Ticks are vectors for serious infectious diseases such as Lyme borreliosis, Babesia canis and Ehrlichia canis; a product without proven transmission blockade gives a false sense of security.
What does work?
Only pharmaceutically registered products (such as isoxazolines, permethrin or flumethrin) have been tested for efficacy and safety in clinical studies. Products without CTGB (Dutch Medicines Evaluation Board) or EMA registration as a biocide or veterinary medicinal product have never been evaluated on both criteria — even if they are shelved as 'natural'.

Consult a veterinary surgeon for a prevention schedule that fits the dog's risk profile and weight. Never combine multiple (essential) oils or unregistered products without veterinary advice.
Why this verdict?
The available literature consists exclusively of case series, toxicological monographs and narrative reviews — no randomised clinical trials on the efficacy of natural agents in dogs. Toxicity studies demonstrate harm, but evidence for flea or tick prevention is entirely absent. Without controlled efficacy studies, no 'natural' agent can be recommended.
Interactions with medication
- Tea tree oil potentiates the effect of other neurotoxic substances; combination with other essential oils increases toxicity risk
- Garlic acts additively with other oxidative stressors on red blood cells (such as certain antibiotics or paracetamol)
Legal status (Netherlands)
In the Netherlands, products sold as flea or tick controllers fall under biocidal product regulation (Regulation EU 528/2012) or veterinary medicinal product regulation (Regulation EU 2019/6). Products without Ctgb or EMA registration may not legally make a pest control claim; nevertheless, many 'natural' agents are marketed as such.
