What is coconut oil?

Coconut oil is a plant-based fat extracted from the flesh of the coconut. It consists of approximately 90% saturated fat — significantly more than common animal feeding guidelines recommend. The most prevalent fatty acid is lauric acid, which is often referred to as a 'medium-chain triglyceride' (MCT). This designation is misleading: lauric acid behaves metabolically largely as a long-chain fatty acid and therefore provides fewer of the supposed MCT benefits than marketing suggests [1].

Commonly heard claims

Owners give coconut oil to dogs and cats for various complaints:

  • Improvement of coat and skin
  • Support of the immune system
  • Better digestion
  • Antibacterial or antiviral effect
  • Joint support in older animals

For none of these applications is there currently sufficient clinical evidence in companion animals.

Coconut oil vs. MCT oil: an important distinction

Research into MCT oil in dogs — particularly refined products based on caprylic acid and capric acid — shows limited but promising results for epilepsy and cognitive decline. This is not the same as coconut oil. Coconut oil contains very little of these specific fatty acids and cannot be regarded as equivalent to medical MCT preparations. Offering coconut oil as 'MCT supplementation' is based on a misunderstanding.

The only available clinical study in dogs with chronic enteropathy showed some improvement in stool consistency, but the researchers themselves consider the findings 'preliminary' [1]. Larger, controlled studies are necessary before conclusions can be drawn.

Safety and risks

Coconut oil is not free of risks, particularly in sensitive animals, older animals or animals with an underlying condition:

  • Gastric complaints: vomiting and diarrhoea can occur, even with small amounts
  • Weight gain: the high caloric density of saturated fat contributes to overweight
  • Pancreatitis: a high-fat diet is associated with inflammation of the pancreas in sensitive dogs; the evidence for a direct cause-effect relationship is still under investigation, but the risk in predisposed animals is real [2]

Veterinary surgeons generally advise against coconut oil as a topical or oral treatment without a specific medical indication. Use in cats is even less studied than in dogs.

When to consult a veterinary surgeon?

Never use coconut oil as a replacement for an established treatment and do not start without consultation in animals with:

  • pancreatitis (past or current)
  • liver diseases
  • overweight or obesity
  • a low-fat therapeutic diet

A veterinary surgeon can assess whether a supplement is useful and which product — if any — is most suitable for the specific situation of the animal.

Why this verdict?

There is no peer-reviewed research demonstrating that coconut oil in healthy dogs or cats improves skin, coat or immunity. The only relevant clinical study (Vecchiato et al. 2023, n=18) investigated dogs with chronic enteropathy and yielded only preliminary results [1]. Controlled, randomised trials are completely absent, justifying an evidence grade D — very weak/anecdotal.

Interactions with medication

  • High-fat diets and lipase-inhibiting medication: combination may increase pancreatic load [2]
  • Weight-management or low-fat therapeutic diets: addition of coconut oil undermines the dietary goal

Legal status (Netherlands)

In the Netherlands, coconut oil is freely available as a foodstuff; there are no specific veterinary registrations or legal restrictions for use as an animal supplement.
