What is heat stress in rabbits?

Rabbits cannot sweat and pant hardly effectively. Their primary way to lose heat is via blood flow to the ears (vasodilation) and an increased respiratory rate [1]. As soon as the ambient temperature rises above 28–30°C — especially in combination with high humidity — these mechanisms become overloaded [1].

The thermoneutral zone of the rabbit lies between 15 and 25°C at a humidity of 60–70% [1]. Above 25°C, the risk of heat stress increases. The normal body temperature is 38.5–40°C; above 40.5°C there is heat stress and above 41–42°C there is a risk of organ damage to the kidneys, brain and intestines [2][3].

Symptoms

Early signs:

  • Red, warm ears
  • Rapid nostril movement
  • Lethargy and reduced appetite
  • Lying stretched out on the ground

Severe signs — immediate action required:

  • Open-mouth breathing (rabbits are obligate nose breathers — this is always an emergency)
  • Shivering or muscle weakness
  • Convulsions or unconsciousness
  • Bloody discharge from mouth, nose or anus

First aid

If heat stress is suspected: move the animal immediately to a cool room and simultaneously call a veterinary surgeon [2][3].

Responsible cooling steps:

  • Dab the ears and legs with cool (not ice-cold) water
  • Place the rabbit on a wet towel
  • Offer lukewarm water — never force
  • Never submerge in a cold bath: this causes shock and a risk of hypothermia [2][3]

Cooling is not a replacement for veterinary care. At a temperature above 40.5°C or in the presence of severe symptoms, an emergency appointment is always necessary.

What does the evidence say about additional options?

Evidence for specific natural or additional treatments for heat stress in the rabbit is completely lacking. There are no controlled studies on herbs, supplements or alternative cooling methods in this context [1][2][3].

The only proven treatment for severe heat stress is veterinary intervention: intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, correction of electrolytes and controlled temperature reduction. Antibiotics are sometimes used to prevent bacterial translocation from the intestines as a result of the heat damage [3].

Additional options are not an addition here — they are a risk if they delay the time to veterinary care.
