Many popular house and garden plants are toxic to dogs and cats. Evidence is strong (grade A): lilies are life-threatening to cats, sago palm has a mortality rate of approximately 50% in dogs and cats, and oleander and azalea can also be fatal. If ingestion is suspected: contact a vet immediately.

Why plants can be dangerous

'Natural' does not mean 'safe'. Plants produce toxic substances as an evolutionary defence against grazing. For pets — which have had no evolutionary exposure to these substances — even small quantities can cause serious damage. Toxicity depends on the active poison, the ingested amount, the animal's body weight and the species: cats and dogs do not always react the same way to the same plant.

The most dangerous plants by category

Kidney damage (cats: life-threatening)

Lilies (Lilium spp. and Hemerocallis/daylilies) are one of the most dangerous houseplants for cats. Even a small leaf, a remnant of a petal or pollen on the coat that is swallowed during grooming can cause acute kidney failure [1][2]. The water in a vase with lilies is also dangerous. Clinical signs often begin within two to four hours; kidney failure can follow within 24 to 72 hours. Without treatment, the outcome is rarely good. Dogs react considerably more mildly to lilies, but caution is also required with them.

Liver and nerve damage (dogs and cats)

Sago palm (Cycas revoluta) — popular as a houseplant and garden plant in milder climates — contains cycasin. All parts of the plant are toxic; the seeds contain the highest concentration. Ingestion of just two seeds can be fatal. Even with intensive veterinary treatment, approximately half of the poisoned dogs do not survive [3]. Signs include vomiting, jaundice, liver insufficiency and neurological deficits.

Irritation of the mouth and gastrointestinal tract

Dieffenbachia, pothos (Epipremnum aureum) and monstera contain calcium oxalate crystals. Upon ingestion, these crystals cause immediate, painful irritation in the mouth, throat and oesophagus. The complaints are more severe than they appear — the animal is clearly in pain — but they are rarely fatal. Treatment is supportive.

Cardiotoxic and neurotoxic plants

Oleander (Nerium oleander), azalea (Rhododendron spp.) and monkshood (Aconitum) contain compounds that directly affect the heart and nervous system. Cardiac arrhythmias, seizures and death are documented outcomes. All parts of the plant are dangerous; even wilted flowers or fallen leaves remain toxic.

What to do if ingestion is suspected

  1. Call the veterinary surgeon immediately or an animal poison control line — do not wait for symptoms.
  2. Note as precisely as possible which plant, how much and how long ago.
  3. Take a photo or a piece of the plant to the practice.
  4. Do not attempt to induce vomiting yourself unless the veterinary surgeon explicitly advises this — with some poisonings this is harmful.

Speed is the most important factor for a good prognosis in almost all plant poisonings. With lilies in cats, every hour counts.

Why this verdict?

The danger of lilies to cats is documented in published case series and clinical reviews in peer-reviewed veterinary journals [1][2]. The prognosis for sago palm poisoning in dogs is supported by a cohort study [3]. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center manages a systematically controlled database of more than 400 plant species per animal species [4]. Together, these sources justify grade A: the evidence is consistent, reproducible and clinically relevant, although large-scale randomised research in pets is by definition absent.
