What is it?
Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the body and forms an important component of cartilage, tendons and ligaments. As a supplement, two forms are relevant for dogs:
- UC-II (undenatured type II collagen): Derived from chicken cartilage; presumably works via oral tolerance — the immune system learns to attack joint cartilage less.
- Collagen hydrolysates (collagen peptides): Hydrolysed fragments from fish, skin or bone, with a molecular weight of 2–6 kDa; are absorbed in the intestine as oligopeptides and distributed to cartilage tissue.
What is it used for?
The primary area of application is osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) in dogs, particularly in cases of mild to moderate complaints: reduced mobility, lameness and stiffness.
What does the evidence say?
UC-II
An RCT with 60 dogs compared UC-II with robenacoxib (an NSAID). UC-II yielded a comparable improvement in mobility — measured with the LOAD scale (Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs) — of 31–33% [1]. This is remarkable, as NSAIDs are considered the gold standard.
A separate double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study combined UC-II with Boswellia serrata in dogs with mild to moderate mobility problems. A measurable improvement was visible after only four weeks [2].
Collagen hydrolysates
A narrative review from 2025 summarises several dog studies and reports a reduction in lameness of approximately 30% [3]. However: biomarkers for cartilage metabolism did not show a consistent picture, which means it is still unclear exactly how the mechanism works at tissue level [3].

In severe osteoarthritis, collagen supplements are insufficient as a standalone treatment. NSAIDs or other interventions then generally remain necessary as the primary approach.
Safety
Collagen preparations are generally well tolerated in dogs. No serious adverse effects have been reported in the available studies [1][2][3]. Because dosage is not standardised, guidance by a veterinary surgeon is recommended — especially in cases of long-term use or combination with other agents.
Use alongside conventional treatment
Collagen is not a replacement for veterinary care. It can be considered as a supplement in mild cases or as part of a broader pain management plan, in consultation with the veterinary surgeon. In moderate to severe osteoarthritis, conventional pain relief (NSAIDs, physiotherapy) remains the basis.
Why this verdict?
Grade B is based on two randomised controlled studies (one of which was double-blind placebo-controlled) and a narrative review from 2025. The total clinical evidence comprises only five studies (as of 2025), dosing guidelines are lacking, and biomarkers for cartilage metabolism show variable outcomes.
Interactions with medication
- Caution with concurrent use of NSAIDs (robenacoxib, meloxicam) — combination has been used in studies but not systematically investigated for safety
- Combination with Boswellia serrata has been investigated and appears safe [2]
Legal status (Netherlands)
In the Netherlands, collagen preparations fall under the category of feed supplements for animals (animal feed); they are not registered as veterinary medicinal products and do not require a prescription.
