What is cognitive dysfunction?
Cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS in dogs, FCD in cats) is a neurodegenerative condition that is functionally comparable to Alzheimer's disease in humans. Characteristic symptoms are summarised in the acronym DISHA: Disorientation, altered Interactions, Sleep-wake disturbance, loss of Housetraining and Activity change. The condition affects an estimated 28% of dogs aged 11-12 years; prevalence rises sharply with age. In cats, the picture is similar, but less researched.
Important: symptoms of CDS overlap with pain (osteoarthritis), hypertension, hypothyroidism, brain tumour and sensory loss. A veterinary surgeon must rule out other causes before CDS is diagnosed. Supplementary products are only useful after a diagnosis.
What does the evidence say?
A systematic review from 2025 evaluated diets and nutraceuticals on cognitive function in older dogs and cats [1]. The most researched options:

All findings come from studies with a limited number of participants and short follow-up. No supplementary intervention has been demonstrated as a cure or complete inhibition of progression — it concerns possible delay or limited symptom improvement [1].
MCT oil: most evidence
MCT supplementation has the strongest substantiation in dogs. In addition to cognition-specific data from [1], a multicentre RCT in dogs showed that MCT is well tolerated and biologically active via ketone bodies in the brain [2]. This supports the reasoning behind use in CDS, even though that RCT focused on epilepsy.
Supplementary is not a replacement
Registered veterinary medicinal products (in the Netherlands, selegiline is available for dogs) exist for CDS. The choice of medication, supplement or a combination belongs to the treating veterinary surgeon. Supplementary products that are used without a diagnosis or alongside an untreated condition run the risk of delaying effective care.
Safety and practical points of attention
- Species-specific: not all products that are safe for dogs are safe for cats — use only products that are explicitly formulated for the target species or approved by the veterinary surgeon.
- Quality differences: the market for cognition supplements in animals is poorly regulated; active ingredient concentrations vary greatly per brand.
- Do not adjust dosages yourself: the correct amount depends on weight, age, other medication and the rest of the diet.
Why this verdict?
A systematic review from 2025 [1] evaluated enriched diets and nutraceuticals on cognitive function in older dogs and cats and found positive signals for MCT oil, antioxidants, omega-3 and SAMe. However, the quality of evidence is limited: participant numbers are small, follow-up periods are short and studies are methodologically heterogeneous. A multicentre RCT [2] supports the safety and biological mechanism of MCT supplementation in dogs, but that trial focused on epilepsy, not cognition. Hence grade B: moderate evidence with clear limitations.
Interactions with medication
- SAMe may interact with MAO inhibitors (including selegiline) and serotonergic agents — do not combine without a veterinary surgeon
- Omega-3 in high doses may affect blood clotting — report use before surgeries or when using blood thinners
Legal status (Netherlands)
Nutraceuticals and enriched diets for cognitive support are complementary feed, not registered veterinary medicinal products. Curative claims are not legally permitted. In the Netherlands, selegiline is registered as a veterinary medicinal product for CDS in dogs and is available exclusively via a veterinary surgeon.
