What is osteoarthritis in dogs?
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease in which cartilage slowly breaks down and inflammation occurs in the joint. It is one of the most common chronic conditions in dogs, particularly in older and heavy breeds. Typical signs are stiffness after rest, reduced desire to move, lameness and visible pain on touch or movement.
What does the evidence say per supplement?

Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) from fish oil have the strongest support in this category. Two independent RCTs showed that dogs on omega-3 supplementation required fewer NSAIDs and demonstrably bore weight better on osteoarthritic limbs [3][4]. A broad narrative review of non-pharmacological treatments confirms this picture [6]. Therapeutic diets rich in omega-3 show comparable effects in a meta-analysis [2].
Green-lipped mussel
A systematic review from 2021 found positive effects on pain score and mobility in dogs with osteoarthritis [5]. However, the authors pointed to considerable heterogeneity between studies and small sample sizes. The evidence is promising, but not yet solid enough to recommend as a first choice.
Curcumin and Boswellia
One RCT combined curcumin (Curcuvet) with boswellia extract and common nutraceuticals. Dogs in the treatment group scored better on force plate analysis and clinical assessment scales [1]. However, the study is small and short-term; independent replication in larger populations is still lacking.
CBD (cannabidiol)
A pharmacokinetic study by Cornell University investigated CBD in dogs with osteoarthritis and reported statistically significantly lower pain scores and higher mobility assessment [7]. The study is methodologically sound but limited in size. In the Netherlands, moreover, a specific legal framework applies to the use of CBD in animals (see below).
What does not work or is insufficiently researched?
Many products on the market — including homeopathy, magnetotherapy and various unspecified herbal mixtures — have no or insufficient scientific evidence for osteoarthritis in dogs [6]. Absence of evidence is not the same as evidence that something works, but without substantiation use cannot be justified.
Supplemental is not a replacement
None of the above options has been investigated as a complete replacement for veterinary pain management. A veterinarian-guided approach — with weight management, physiotherapy and medication if indicated — remains the basis [6]. Supplemental options can, if suitable for the individual animal, be considered in consultation with a veterinarian alongside that basis.
Why this verdict?
Grade B is based on two independent RCTs for omega-3 fatty acids [3][4], a systematic review for green-lipped mussel [5] and a broad meta-analysis of nutraceuticals [2]. Limitations include small study populations, short durations and limited independent replication for curcumin and CBD; the evidence is promising but not yet convincing enough for grade A.
Interactions with medication
- Omega-3 fatty acids at high doses may have a blood-thinning effect; caution with concurrent use of anticoagulants or high-dose NSAIDs.
- CBD is metabolised via the cytochrome P450 system and can affect blood levels of other medicines (including some NSAIDs and antiepileptics); consultation with a veterinary surgeon is essential.
Legal status (Netherlands)
In the Netherlands, CBD products for animals do not have a regular marketing authorisation as a veterinary medicinal product. Administration falls under the Wet dieren (Animals Act); treatment advice and prescribing are reserved for veterinary surgeons. Owners considering CBD must always discuss this with a veterinary surgeon before purchasing a product.
